Recorded over the past two years in Wales, LA and Reykjavik, and mixed for a year in the confines of his own home, “Sweet Heart Sweet Light” will unbelievably be Spiritualized’s seventh studio album and it promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of 2012. An inspiration and revelation to many well-known musicians, most recently the likes of Alex Turner, Elbow and Florence The Machine; Spiritualized continue to engage and impress musicians and fans alike. Taking musical risks is a hallmark of Spiritualized’s outlook. Witness them playing the new album unannounced, from start to finish, live at the Royal Albert Hall recently – something unheard of in today’s clamour for instant hit gratification. As J.Spacemen says ‘I don’t believe there are any rules’ and this album will testify to that.

The band recently announced a six-date UK tour in support of the new album in November 2012. They'll also perform at the Wilderness Festival, Cornbury Park, August 10-12 and Bestival, Newport, Isle of Wight 6-9 September. They'll be hitting the road in the US this May.

Teenage Fanclub (Domino Publishing) singer, songwriter and bassist, Gerard Love releases a new album on 2nd April 2012 under the moniker 'Lightships'. Love has also collaborated with Domino's own The Pastels (Domino Publishing).

Deciding that the key to the sound of the record would be tremolo, delay and flute, Glasgow-based friends were brought together to play on the record: Dave McGowan (guitar, Teenage Fanclub), Brendan O'Hare(drums, from the first incarnation of Teenage Fanclub), Tom Crossley (flute,International Airport and The Pastels) and Bob Kildea (bass, Belle & Sebastian).

Electric Cables is an album of tender, observational songs, played with an invigorating and easy sense of purpose; the sound of friends enjoying one another’s company and allowing ideas and experiments to flourish.

With comparisons as broad as Roy Orbison and Liz Fraser, to Elvis and Dead Can Dance, the sound of Genuflex is certainly hard to define. One thing that is clear, as the name suggests, is that anyone who does hear the debut EP ‘Bludevotion’ is likely to be transfixed by the beguiling music of Genuflex, AKA Finn Vine. Further testament to his unique style came when he was asked to provide one of the standout covers on the recent David Bowie tribute album We Were So Turned On, alongside more prominent artists like Duran Duran and John Frusciante.

Initially confined to Finn’s bedroom with no intention of being played to anyone, Finn created a crooner called Genuflex, a persona through which he could fully explore the almost monastic solitude of the creative process. Using only his laptop, Finn indulged himself in making the arrangements as grand or as minimal as he pleased, while also submitting entirely to his emotions in the lyrics. Writing, recording, producing and playing everything himself, Genuflex was born out of this solitary ritual, a divine moment alone.

What resulted is a sublime and original sound, at once bold and artful yet with melodies that soar. With subject matter that ranges from heartache and loss, to obsession and fate, Finn’s voice cuts through these huge themes and elevates them to a truly heavenly level. ‘Bludevotion’ meditates on yearning over menacing swathes of synth bass, while ‘I’ll Wander On’ is unlike anything else around. A skewed take on blue-eyed soul emblazoned with distortion, Finn’s vocal is hypnotic as he sings of a broken heart. The effect is mesmerising.

Genuflex conjures up some of the great artists of our time; the dramatic torch song anguish of Scott Walker and David Lynch’s surreal agony of life, without neglecting the pop nous found in Talk Talk, Berlin era Bowie and Cocteau Twins. Genuflex achieves that rare mix of raw emotional renderings with a modern dynamic.

Conor O'Brien takes home an Ivor Novello Award!

We are thrilled to announce that Conor J O’Brien from Villagers has today won an Ivor Novello Award in the category “Best Song Musically and Lyrically” for the wonderful Becoming a Jackal from the debut album of the same title.

Villagers are currently on a UK headline tour and will perform at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire this Saturday 21st May. The band will also be appearing at several festivals throughout the Summer including T in the Park, Latitude, Eden Sessions, Green Man & Field Day.

Malian duo Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté have won the Best Traditional World Music Album GRAMMY. ‘Ali and Toumani’ is the successor to the GRAMMY winning duets album 'In the Heart of the Moon', and features contributions from Orlando 'Cachaíto' López on bass.

Produced by Nick Gold and recorded by Jerry Boys, ‘Ali and Toumani’ was the last album recorded by both Ali Farka Touré and Cachaíto López. This makes Ali Farka Touré the only African artist to have three GRAMMY winning albums, his first was for the album ‘Talking Timbuktu’ in 1994.

It's a new year and here at Domino we're celebrating with the news of our newest signing, Austra, and the release of their debut single, 'Beat and the Pulse' on 21st February 2011.

Austra is the brainchild of Canadian born Katie Stelmanis, a unique talent in possession of some seriously evocative vocal stylings who grew up on a diverse musical diet; Puccini, Nine Inch Nails, and the riot-girl greats, just to name a few, having had a significant influence.

For the past few years Katie has been a mainstay on the Toronto indie scene, playing in a variety of bands, honing her talents and consolidating her experiences, until finally she decided to bring in long time friends and collaborators, Dorian Wolf on bass, and Maya Postepski as beat programmer and producer, and Austra was born.

For their debut single Austra have concocted a storming piece of leftfield pop, fuelled by surging electro beats and undeniably strong melodies belted out by a voice that practically demands attention. Although now firmly settled in New York City, Young Magic’s three members came together through equal helpings of openness and fortuity. In 2010, singer and producer Isaac Emmanuel had left his home continent of Australia to travel across Europe, over to New York, and down through Mexico, all the while creating and recording music with whatever instruments he found along the way. While in Mexico, Emmanuel kept a tight correspondence with fellow Australian expat Michael Italia, who for months had been similarly traveling across Europe and South America with portable recording gear in tow. They decided to meet up in New York, where their good friend from a few years prior, Indonesian-born vocalist Melati Malay, had been living and making her own recordings. In early 2011 the three friends, who had initially bonded over their broad musical palettes, began recording together and contributing songs to the record, culling influences and finding their own footing among them.

Glyph is a new label and publishing house for electronic music. Glyph was launched in late 2011 by Matt Sweeney, Michael Mercer (Domino Recording Co) and James Cator (a DJ, based at Eagle Rock). Alongside Essáy, their first signings include Squarehead and Falcon Lake from the UK and Canada’s Trevor & Ever. Domino Publishing administer its works Worldwide.

Simon Schilling aka Essáy, is a young producer from rural Germany. His richly textured compositions. ‘Morning Mountain’ was inspired by an ambient composition by award winning New Zealand cinematic composer Rhian Sheehan and worked into a beautifully emotional epic that slowly builds over 7 minutes with weightless melodies. Alongside ‘Morning Mountain’ we have ‘A Cold Day’ a 9 minute breath of icy fresh air, as fragile and beautiful as a frosted spiderweb.

Mike Lindsay founded the band “Tunng” in 2004. He co-wrote and produced all four of the group’s albums, and has been considered a pioneer of the “folktronica” scene. His work with Tunng has seen him touring the World, playing with an eclectic range of musical talent from Tuareg band and Tinariwen to Canadian hip hop artist Buck 65. Film4 used Tunng song ‘Woodcat’ for 6 months on their seasonal advertising. He has produced a number of albums for other contemporary folk and experimental artists in the meantime, among them Serafina Steer, Hannah Peel, Bethjeans Houghton, and Cibelle.

His production work has also seen him co-writing and producing two tracks on the Mercury Music Prize winning Speech Therapy by Speech Debelle.

Mike has worked on bespoke music composition for Film and TV since 2002, being involved in large re-branding campaigns for ITV in 2003 and again in 2004, as well as sound-tracking many high end commercials (O2, T-mobile, Littlewoods, Samsung and Honda) all of which carried his characteristic music identity.

Mike is currently writing and producing a solo record in Iceland based on his experiences living in the far north of the country, in collaboration with an eclectic group of local musicians.

David Lowe is an established composer and producer working primarily in television, radio, branding, idents and commercials. Together, Steve Moore and A.E. Paterra are best known as Zombi on Relapse Records (Domino Publishing). They have for some time developed a synthesized sensory exploration that intensifies the senses with Moore on guitar and bass and Paterra drums. Theirs is an altogether more science fiction vibe and one that sits well amongst soundtrack artists like Wendy Carlos, Rachel Elkind, Gil Melle and John Carpenter. Some parts of their latest album 'Spirit Animal' would not be out of place in an early 90s action movie (Earthly Powers) whereas with other elements more ethereal and thoughtful (Spirit Animal) - may be the conclusion of a conflict.

BILL RYDER-JONES: SOUNDTRACK TO LEAVE TAKING (DOMINO PUBLISHING)

Bill Ryder-Jones began his musical career as the lead guitarist of The Coral, a six piece band whose psychedelic strain of guitar music exploded onto the Liverpool music scene in 2002. Highly wary of the singer-songwriter tag, Bill is now mainly focusing on a solo album and would rather be known for instrumental pieces perhaps born out of is affection for the film soundtrack works of Ennio Morricone, Jonny Greenwood, Yann Tiersen and Michael Galasso. Keen to score films himself, Bill is in the middle of exploring new liaisons with well known soundtrack writers including working on the features soundtrack to Kieron Hawkes' London based thriller, Piggy. Bill also performed with Alex Turner on the Warp Film soundtrack to Submarine.

MATTHEW EATON: Pram | sound design for theatre | the Shadow Shows (Domino All-In)

Multi-instrumentalist Matthew Eaton, is best known to Domino as one of the founding members of Pram but also as an accomplished sound designer with professional experience in theatre and film. Over the past three years, Matt has worked on countless scores for projects including Hamlet (Creation Theatre Co), It Ain't All Bollywood (Rifco Arts) and most recently worked on a production The Gambler for BBC Radio 3. Versitile and swift, Matt enabled by his own studio facilities has created sounds from exotic asian to mysterious and eerie to sugar plum nursery style. Only Matt knows how to make running a screwdriver along an electric guitar sound like the perfect match for an underwater dream.

Pram themselves are no strangers to film and TV usage. 'Track of the Cat' was used on a BT advert and have had uses in other commercials including Volkswagen 30 Years in the Making. Last summer, Birmingham (UK) had the pleasure of premiering a new collaboration between Filmficciones and Domino artist Pram at Supersonic Festival. The half hour show screened black and white horror film footage accompanied by a live original soundtrack by Pram. Commissioned by Capsule (the curators of Supersonic festival), the show hopes to venture nationwide and beyond. Here you can watch the trailer for this production.

Jon Hopkins came to the attention of many when his track 'Light Through the Veins' formed the basis of 'Life in Technicolour' by Coldplay. Over the past few years, Jon has had the opportunity to work on and off stage with all sorts of high profile musicians including work with Brian Eno on the official soundtrack to Peter Jackson directed 'Lovely Bones'. The Hollywood release starring Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon out in cinema's now features Jon's inimitable piano work and was a co-write between Hopkins, Eno and Leo Abrahams.

On stage, his own performances are often coupled with extraordinary VJ sets reveal the talent of being able to lure an audience from listening to accessible, classical piano melodies through to the outer limits of experimental, industrial electronic beats. This versitility has enabled Jon to work on sound design for countless advertising campaigns such as RKCR/Y&Rs 'Breathe' fire safety campaign (directed by Dougal Wilson at Blink) and Honda CR-Z directed by Frank Budgen. His reliable work ethic has made him a popular music provider in this field. Jon completed the soundtrack to Vertigo films' 'Monsters' (above) for which its director Gareth Edwards won the Moët New Directors Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Jon also completed the soundtrack to the Partizan produced short film Rob & Valentyna in Scotland directed by Eric Lynne which premiered at Sundance festival in January this year.

STEVEN SEVERIN: SOUNDTRACK TO DELPHINIUM (DOMINO PUBLISHING)

Steven Severin formed Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1976 with Siouxsie Sioux. Over the next two decades, Steven featured on all 16 albums and 30 singles as co-lyricist and songwriter. Since then Steven Severin has been busy working on various solo projects including composing for soundtracks. You can have a look at some of this output on his YouTube Channel here which features the above footage from the film London Voodoo.

Also under 'favorites' on Steven's YouTube Channel are some rough clips taken during his 2009 US shows where he performed new scores to the screening of a 1928 surrealist classic 'The Seashell and the Clergyman' plus a programme of scores to short films by emerging avant-garde film makers. In NYC - Steven premiered his scoring of Jean Cocteau's 1930s silent classic 'Blood of a Poet'. Slowdivemusic blog described it as 'an elaboration of the moods and emotions on the screen' and said of Severin that 'he can even influence future generations into a new mindset about how to approach music'.

Last year, Steven worked on the soundtrack to the short film 'Delphinium - a childhood portrait of Derek Jarman' - a stylized and lyrical coming-of-age portrait of legendary painter, filmmaker, and activist Derek Jarman. Written and directed by Matthew Mishory it was shot on super8 and HD by cinematographer Lili Wilde. The film which resulted in a tour of the US by Severin played out at various festivals in the USA and ended up being projected onto an ice sculpture at Sundance.

Severin recently completed another score for 'A Long Weekend with the Son of God' by TV director George Carey which is due to air on UK TV soon.

OLY RALFE: SOUNDTRACK TO BUNNY AND THE BULL (DOMINO PUBLISHING)

We are delighted to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack to Bunny and The Bull (Warp X) composed and performed by Domino Publishing's own Ralfe Band. The film starring Edward Hogg, Simon Farnaby, Veronica Echegui, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt was also written and directed by Paul King (Mighty Boosh).

The video to Ralfe Band track Women of Japan drawn and produced by Oly Ralfe, was directed and animated by Nigel Coan and Ivana Zorn of Nipple productions. The animation pair also animated elements of Bunny and the Bull and the Moon in the Mighty Boosh.

As well as an accomplished musician, Oly Ralfe is a documentary director in his own right having won a Raindance award in 2006 for the chronicles of the life and crimes of notorious Bob Dylan obsessive and Garbology inventor A.J Weberman.Oly directed a Mighty Boosh documentary film Journey of the Childmen - The Mighty Boosh On Tour which has been screened at several film festivals including Raindance, London and Leeds.

Ralfe Band will be celebrating the DVD release of Bunny and the Bull on Wed 28 April by playing plenty of songs from the film at the Borderline, London.

STEVE MASON: SOUNDTRACK TO LA LA LAND (DOMINO ALL-IN)

Steve Mason (Beta Band, King Biscuit Time and Black Affair) released of solo album, 'Boys Outside'in May2010. Signed to Domino imprint Double Six, the back to basics 10-track album was produced by Richard X and Steve Mason. The album was preceded by a single 'Lost & Found' in April 2010.

Steve has also completed the soundtrack for US series La La Land - British character comic Marc Wootton’s first American series. BBC Three has bought the rights to air La La Land with a voice-over by Julian Barratt. The experience whilst challenging opened a whole new creative stream for Steve Mason who is interested in being involved in similar projects. Steve provided voiceover to a short film for Relentless here.

Steve is currently in the studio with dub reggae producer Dennis Bovell working on a ‘dub version’ of the Boys Outside who produced a wide diversity of bands including The Pop Group, Orange Juice and The Slits.

Recorded in Brooklyn at Gary's Electric studio over the course of a month and self-produced with the help of engineer Al Carson (Yeasayer, Oneohtrix Point Never), Peaking Lights consider ‘Lucifer’ a nocturnal version of their sound. “To us this record is about play and playfulness, unconditional love, rhythms and pulses, creation and vibration,” says Coyes. ‘Lucifer’ is also Peaking Lights’ most ambitious release to date in terms of its approach and scope – boasting much to please anyone previously seduced by the genre-defying, gritty grooves and enchanting, sensual melodies of the band’s earlier work but also proving an altogether more heavy, propulsive and focused effort. Incredibly, there’s even space within ‘Lucifer’ for Coyes and Dunis’ already insanely broad palette of influences to widen even further – touches of analogue electronic dance music, sound collage and straight up pop joining the dub, krautrock and minimal disco of ‘936’ in a hypnotising concoction.

ROSE IN LONDON - THE LOVESTREET

We have been delighted at the number of new films being made within the fashion industry by creative directors brave enough to use some of the most cutting edge music. Not only is it about people wearing nice clothes but the films are becoming hugely visually pleasing like Metamorphosis by The North Circular.

I've finally got round to grabbing the embed code for this film that I want to share with you. It was a product of the fantastic, new, hugely relevant course being offered by the London College of Fashion - MA Fashion Media Production, which this month enjoyed its first class graduation with all students passing including three with distinction. Whilst it may seem unfair to single out one student from an entire year - recent MA_12 graduate Saskia Reis had her music request from Domino rejected last year but we kept in touch. And we're so happy she's still talking to us as we are now able to look upon her film output like a proud parent. This film, entirely created by her, is one of several in her pioneering street-style blog THE LOVESTREET that proves that fashion - on the street anyways - can still have soul.

We look forward to the output of MA_13 and congratulations to LCF for taking the brave step in creating this course and good luck to all the students participating. If you want to find out more about Saskia, LCF or have a chat about this - email me.

To get closer to fans and showcase one of the most influential independent audio catalogues of the last 20 years, Domino Records, the label home of
Arctic Monkeys, Animal Collective and The Kills is releasing a dedicated mobile app. The Domino app was conceived following the success of Domino Radio week in June 2011, which left the label with 168 hours of archived radio shows hosted by some of the label’s friends from the independent music community including the likes of Colin Greenwood of Radiohead, Matt Helders of Arctic Monkeys, Mike Skinner (The Streets) and Robert Wyatt. The station broadcast only for a single week 24 hours a day, yet received well over 300K listeners online and many more in London via FM transmissions.
