THE CLANG GROUP 'PRACTICE' OUT 30TH SEPTEMBER 2016

DOMINO RECORDINGS
'Practice' & Instrumentals
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

On turning 60, legendary producer Clive Langer decided it was time to get a band together. Their first LP is 'Practice' will be released on Domino.

Previous to that moment, Clive’s CV read like a route map of the last four decades of the very best British music. As a member of legendary rock’n’roll misfits Deaf School, Langer had helped influence a generation of kids who’d go on to form bands as diverse as Madness and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Later on - with studio partner Alan Winstanley – he helped steer everything from One Step Beyond to Kilimanjaro; Too-Rye-Ay to Shipbuilding (a co-write with Elvis Costello) with stop offs for the Attractions, the Commotions, Morrissey, Roddy Frame and even the Dame himself (Bowie’s timeless classic Absolute Beginners). But something about that significant age set him on a different path.

Recorded at Iguana Studio in Brixton with musician mates and long time cohorts (including Suggs and Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay), Practice is jagged, melodious, ingenious, impulsive and exhilarating.

QUASI TO REISSUE FIRST THREE STUDIO ALBUMS

DOMINO RECORDINGS
'R&B Transmogrification’s, Featuring “Birds” , Field Studies'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Indie rock had seen power duos before: Guv’ner, Royal Trux, Buckingham-Nicks, the Carpenters – but they’d never sounded like Quasi. Drumming like a controlled detonation; mutant blues coming out of an electric harpsichord or guitar by turns. Backwards through the backwoods of AM pop and Pebbles psych to create a new form: bar-room baroque. Honey-golden multitracked vocals and some of the bleakest, black-eyed, black-hearted lyrics put to paper since Lou Reed woke up in a bad mood. And all played with the kind of ramshackle ease that only comes from weeks of practice, months in the van, and serious chops.

Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes first collaborated in 1990 as Motorgoat, but by 1993 they had become Quasi. These initial excursions would later be re-released as Early Recordings, but 1997’s R&B Transmogrification is where they define their double act. On drums and harmonies, Weiss is all low-key Bonham-ie, power with poise. On top Coomes’ Roxichord makes you wonder how the electronic harpsichord never took off, its low-end crunch with top notes sounding like Ray Manzarek with a Superfuzz.

From Weiss’s opening salvo, and the first action-painting splatter of Coomes’ keyboard on ‘Our Happiness is Guaranteed’, Featuring “Birds” is Quasi at their peak, melding jams-kicking rock’n’roll, punk action, and chord shifts that feel like the change of a season. The success of Weiss’s other group, Sleater-Kinney, in the meantime was clearly only firing up, rather than undercutting Quasi.

Closing in on the millennium, both feet on the pedals, Field Studies arrives in 1999. Organ edges out the Roxichord, making for a sound less jagged and more floating – like the protagonist of ‘The Star You Left Behind’, drifting out into an infinite void.  Does Field Studies have an Elliott Smith turn to the harmonies? They do share that heady hit of sweet-sour power-pop – or maybe both Quasi and Smith have a Heatmiser influence, given that’s the Portland band that Coomes and Smith had played in together.

FLYING SAUCER ATTACK REISSUE CLASSIC ALBUMS 'DISTANCE', 'FURTHER' AND 'CHORUS' OUT 18TH MARCH 2016

DOMINO RECORDINGS
'Distance', 'Further' and 'Chorus'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Following last year’s re-emergence with Instrumentals in 2015, three of Flying Saucer Attack’s most revered albums - Distance, Further and Chorus are to be re-issued on Domino.

Watch and listen to Distance’s ‘Oceans’ above, and stream Further’s ‘In The Light of Time’ and Chorus’ ‘Feedback Song’ via fsa.space HERE.

David Pearce re-materialised last year with the beautiful Instrumentals 2015 and attracted all manner of attention - as one does when one emerges from self-imposed exile holding a glittering prize. Without warning he became part of the musical landscape once again, heralding a new phase of the project he initiated in the early 1990s. Interviews and retrospective features assessed his importance in the continually unfolding story of British music, referring back to the music contained within these three artifacts, which sound as untainted - even more so, in fact - as they did on their initial release.

There are many that believe the concept of electric folk to have died at some point in the 1970s following the heyday of bands and artists such as Fairport Convention, Roy Harper and John Martyn. These three reissues give the lie to that commonly held misconception. For while Distance, Further and Chorus do not cleave all that faithfully to the folk rock template established by the electrified rovers of that supposed golden age, and incorporate elements absorbed from musics as varied as krautrock, drone and dub, they can be considered in that lineage, with its Arcadian attitude to the unsullied landscapes of Britain and romanticised idea that old traditions may, at some point, produce something fresh and unheard.

There are no Peel sessions anymore - that tradition was buried in the pyramids with John Peel himself upon the great man's passing. Of the thousands left in the wake, six are ascribed to Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - and of those six, three have been combined to form the deeply congruous experience of Pond Scum.

CASS MCCOMBS 'A FOLK SET APART' COMPILATION OUT 11TH DECEMBER 2015

DOMINO RECORDINGS
'A Folk Set Apart'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

A Folk Set Apart: Rarities, B-Sides & Space Junk, Etc., is an alternate retelling of the last decade in the life of extraordinary songwriter Cass McCombs.

Comprising songs from 2003-2014, the album showcases McCombs’ thematic and emotional diversity. A black mirror to his catalogue, there are varying moments of reflection, madness, and dark humor. Also of politics - “Bradley Manning,” which debuted on Democracy Now, is a modern folk ballad of the convicted Army whistleblower, and directly quotes Manning’s own Facebook posts. McCombs has a unique ability to stitch together ancient techniques with our current primitive mind. Listen to 'Evangeline' taken from the album below.

BEAT HAPPENING 'LOOK AROUND' OUT 20TH NOVEMBER 2015

DOMINO RECORDINGS
'Look Around'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Exploding the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre since 1983, Beat Happening formed at Evergreen College in Olympia, Washington by Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis and Bret Lunsford. The band combined a modern primitive pop sound with the D.I.Y. ethos of ‘anyone can do it’ and inspired countless bands and labels along the way. The music community that arose around the band and their label, K, may have seemed the sonic antithesis of their Seattle neighbors (and friends) but was no less influential.

30 years since the release of their self-titled debut album (the subject of a 33 1/3 book out this week), 'Look Around' is a remastered, career-spanning double album anthology, handpicked by the band and a great starting point for the uninitiated as well a refreshing reminder to those who caught the wave the first time around. The 23 tracks range from their 1984 debut single, “Our Secret” b/w “What’s Important”.

The oft-covered “Indian Summer” from 1998’s Jamboree LP — which Ben Gibbard once called “the indie ‘Freebird’” and was named one of Pitchfork’s “Best Songs of the 1980s” (“it means something slightly different every time it’s heard”) — is now streaming BELOW
