With the release of their new album, Sparkle Hard, heading our way on May 18th, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks have shared a documentary short film shot on-location in Portland, OR directed by Brook Linder. Watch above.

It’s an intimate and brilliant glimpse into the quotidian world of Stephen Malkmus – songwriting legend, tennis champ, horseback rider, band-leader, and all-around charming goofball.  “Since watching this doc,” says Stephen, “I’ve improved my tennis game immensely… I’ve shortened my follow through on the forehand and made progress on a buttery topspin backhand.”

Director Brook Linder has shared his inspiration, explaining “I have long been a Malkmus fan, and for years have thought very hard about what I would make with him given the opportunity. He’s such a unique character and there’s obviously so much history involved - making anything at all seemed pretty formidable.  To me he is mysterious and nothing is obvious. The idea of making a typical visual to match the sound was out straight away.”  Brook, thinking back to when he first saw Malkmus play live, at Pitchfork Fest 2007, recalled “the set was mostly Malkmus and an acoustic guitar, and it was so raw and funny and vulnerable and felt rare and weird.  I wanted to capture that side of Malkmus somehow – to grab the mundane details of his life – and it turns out they’re as enigmatic as he is.”

GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Jaakko Eino Kalevi has announced his forthcoming album, Out Of Touch set for release on October 12th released by Weird World Records. Watch the video for 'Emotions in Motion' above.

To coincide with the news, he has also shared the first cut from the record, ‘Emotions In Motion’.

Directed by visual artist Ieva Kabasinskaite, the video was shot in Paris on 35mm and 16mm film. Kabasinskaite says: “The ‘Emotions In Motion’ video is inspired by the techniques used by smugglers of counterfeit luxury goods. In the video, Jaakko Eino Kalevi plays someone who is well-versed in these techniques and we see him going through these meticulous procedures. Through a bizarre visual complicity between the organic containers and their opulent content, the value of these things, as well as where they come from, is being questioned.”

Jaakko adds: “We shot the first part of the video in a busy market in Belleville. I thought I would’ve been more nervous about shooting among people but in the end I wasn’t. I wanted to buy a tracksuit but after the shoot the seller had disappeared.”

Written and produced by Jaakko Eino Kalevi in 2017 in studios in Helsinki and Berlin, where he lives, these ten new songs are among the richest he has composed. He also plays every instrument on the album, including the gliding lines of saxophone that lace the record’s lush grooves. Ranging in style from the Gerry Rafferty swagger of ‘China Eddie’ and Motown psych of ‘This World’ to the Aegean dub of ‘Conceptual Mediterranean (Part 1)’ and continental pop of ‘People in the Centre of the City’, each song is characterised by that familiar JEK warmth and melodic flair.

Battle Lines, the new album from Grammy-winning duo Bob Moses, is set for release September 14th on Domino. “Back Down,” Watch the first official single from the album listen above.

Battle Lines follows the band’s acclaimed debut album, Days Gone By, featuring their worldwide hit “Tearing Me Up.” The band recorded the new album in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon, after writing and testing out new material on the road. Inspired by their time playing raves and rock clubs all over the globe since the release of Days Gone By, Battle Lines takes a harder look at the world in which they find themselves.

“This record is about the battles and struggles we all live through,” says the duo—Vancouver-bred, Los Angeles-based Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance—of the new album. “Battles within ourselves, battles with and within our society, battles between each other, with our loved ones, battles between ideologies. It’s also about struggling to identify where those battles lines start and end, and what within us and within our environments cause these struggles, and ultimately cause our suffering. It’s also about the struggle to reconcile with those things, somehow.”

Born from the Brooklyn underground scene in 2012, the band’s early single releases on taste-making electronic label Scissor & Thread and captivating live performances led to signing with Domino and the release of Days Gone By. Meshing guitar licks, dance-floor ambience and classic songwriting, the duo created a sound that appeals equally to club goers and rock fans.

“My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of colour.  A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all.  The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of HOPE, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness.”
