The innovative work of cellist-composer-electronic-pioneer Arthur Russell will be honored in a new tribute album released 10/21 via Red Hot Organization and Yep Roc. Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell features 26 tracks by more than 20 artists, including Hot Chip, Sufjan Stevens, Phosphorescent, Blood Orange, The Autumn Defense and Lonnie Holley, paying homage to Russell’s boundless creativity and wide-ranging work, which swerved from electronic dance to folk to classical and resulted in what NPR hails as “catchy and hypnotic records that were far ahead of their time.” Watch Hot Chip emulate that try-anything-once attitude in this behind the scenes video clip via Pitchfork:

Over two years in the making, Master Mix earned early support from artists like Jose Gonzalez and Robyn, eager to put their twists on songs like “This Is How We Walk On The Moon” and “Tell You (Today)”; from Matt Wolf, who directed the in-depth documentary ‘Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell’; and from Russell’s longtime partner Tom Lee and the Arthur Russell Estate. Devendra Banhart, citing Russell as his inspiration for moving to New York, said, “It felt somewhat taboo to be messing with such sacrosanct materials… We recorded [“Losing My Taste For The Night Life”] as our way of saying to everyone, ‘Listen to Arthur!’”

Master Mix embodies the genre-defying, experimental spirit that defined Russell’s work. Living in the East Village from the ‘70s until his untimely death in 1992 at age 40 from AIDS-related causes, Russell moved effortlessly between the city’s various music scenes, recording disco beats alongside Nicky Siano one night, and the next, crafting slow, haunting tracks in his apartment with his cello and idiosyncratic warbling voice. The New Yorker called his work “stranded between lands real and imagined: the street and the cornfield; the soft bohemian New York and the hard Studio 54 New York; the cheery bold strokes of pop and the liberating possibilities of abstract art.” Through his collaborations, he earned the admiration of artists like Allen Ginsberg, David Byrne and Philip Glass, who said of Russell’s music: “It does not submit to formula, but subverts the formula.”

Red Hot Organization is dedicated to promoting awareness of AIDS and HIV through the lens of popular culture. Since its inception in 1989, Red Hot has released over 15 compilation albums, including 2009’s Dark Was The Night, featuring The National, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, Arcade Fire and more.

Bonnie “Prince” Billy announces a new album named 'I Made A Place' out via Domino Recordings 15th November 2019. Watch the glorious video for "(At The) Back of The Pit", directed by high school senior Jacob Forman.

The world has changed. Some things will never change. Some are gone forever. Thankfully, this isn't one of them: the wait for new Bonnie “Prince” Billy is now on a timer. What's more, the new single drops a bit of Apocalypse WOW. Picking up in a sense where last year's "Blueberry Jam" left off, "(At The) Back of the Pit" considers what to do with the things we love when it comes time for the death (and therefore, rebirth) of our painstakingly-built'n'kill't world. It's an affirming country jam: elegiac early moments give way to jaunty roots-rock strides, a horn section soulfully charting the long rays at the end of the day as well as the first rays of the new rising sun as they light on all our hopeful tomorrows.

PATRICK WATSON 'WAVE' OUT 18TH OCTOBER 2019 (DOMINO RECORDINGS)

Patrick Watson 'Wave'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Wave, the new album from Canadian artist Patrick Watson, arrives on October 18th via Domino (worldwide excluding Canada) / Secret City (Canada).  Wave is the follow-up to Watson’s 2015 album Love Songs for Robots. Alongside the album announcement today, Wave’s opening track “Dream for Dreaming” is now available, accompanied by a music video directed by Joël Vaudreuil. Watch above.

Talking about the new song, Watson says: “When you come home and your house doesn’t look like the one you left and the strange feeling of being so far from what you had in mind that your skin doesn’t fit anymore. And you’re in the state of disbelief with a strange smile wondering what am I to do now.”

Watson’s sixth studio album is about having a wave knock you over when you realize everything you have in life can be wiped away in a moment – and then learning how not to drown in the process. During the making of the album, Patrick lost his mother, his longtime drummer left the group, and he and his partner separated. Watson brought a notebook underneath the waves and composed tunes about melancholy. The songs are about how sometimes you have to sing a love song to yourself when no one else will, allowing the sound carry you and learning to trust where you will land. It is very personal and intimate, and it is the most humble of all his records.  Reflecting on events in his personal life, and having begun his singing career in the church choir; Watson notes about the album: “It’s the difference between singing a solo at a stranger’s grave as a child and singing one at your own mother’s funeral.”

Following the release of their new album A Bath Full Of Ecstasy in June, Hot Chip are pleased to share the ‘game-review’ video for “Bath Full Of Ecstasy”. Watch above.

The band say about the new video: “Oliver Payne (Safecrackers) is a British born, Los Angeles-based visual artist, video and film-maker, friend of the band, and collaborator. His artwork was used on two of Alexis’ album sleeves and he is also a huge supporter and fan of Hot Chip. Oliver came up with the idea to make a video based around a fictional computer game called ‘Bath Full of Ecstasy’, in the Hot Chip series, from Japan, circa 1988. The video consists of a Youtube-style review and demonstration of the game, which features each band member on their path to save the cursed kingdom, aiming to return melody and colour, and bringing back joy, with the help of the Bubblebath Fairy, a Microphone and some friendly strangers.”

ONE TRUE PAIRING 'DAWN AT THE FACTORY' OUT 3RD SEPTEMBER 2019 (DOMINO ALL-IN)

DOMINO ALL-IN
One True Pairing 'One True Pairing'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Former Wild Beasts songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Tom Fleming will release his debut solo album under the guise One True Pairing on September 20th. Having previously shared the title track, “One True Pairing”, and recent single “I’m Not Afraid”; today, Fleming unveils new single “Dawn At The Factory”. Over looming synths, Tom emphatically sings “Where the strip lights shine, I give you my life”. Listen above.

Talking about the song, he says: “2019’s satanic mills - zero hours, suicide nets, universal credit, cheap labour. The blue-white glow of the factories out on the gyratory and the plastic clad office blocks of the town centre. I wanted to strip the romance back and look at what makes this country run, what makes it tick. The factories are hungry and it’s you they want. I wanted it to sound like the open road but there’s just too much barbed wire around it. The same every night. You do what you have to do. Knackered synths and a Floyd rose. Hope you enjoy it, OTP 2019 x”.

One True Pairing is “the angry northern Springsteen record that I'd always wanted to make” says Tom Fleming, “it's neo-heartland rock". These "heartlands” are the moors above Bradford or Cumbernauld, "places where people live their whole lives and do these things and succeed and fail.” Within this there’s a continuation of the exploration of masculinity that made his former band so unique. As well as being deeply personal, OTP has a wider political resonance, he believes that class is entirely discounted from the current conversation about inclusivity and privilege. In its 11 songs of discordant guitar and aggressive synth Fleming channels his discontent with Britain in 2019 and a “feeling of directionless rage and cheatedness which hasn't gone away."
