Steve Mason has announced details of his new album, About The Light, which is out on Double Six on Friday 18th January 2019.  About The Light is his fourth solo album following Boys Outside (2010), Monkey Minds In The Devil’s Time (2013) and Meet The Humans (2016). Stars Around My Heart, the first track to be shared from the album, is accompanied by a suitably out-there video directed by Brother Willis (www.brotherwillis.com). Watch above.

Talking about the Spielberg meets Ashes to Ashes video, Brother Willis said:

“The concept and inspiration were very much a collaborative effort with Steve.  We share a mutual love for the textures and warm personality that outdated formats have in contrast to the crisp HD 8K of today.  It was an incredible collaborative experiment to shoot on Tube Camera and modern camera and put it all out to tape and back to try and achieve the feeling of watching a beloved sci-fi movie from your youth.  And a good excuse to have amazingly talented people build an alien vessel and hone their early 80’s visual effects skills. We were aiming for an uplifting, Psychedelic Spielberg effect that hopefully we achieved.”

Picking Stephen Street to produce the album, and with a very clear plan in mind, from the off the goal was to capture the songs live and draw out their soulful elements.  Talking about the process, Stephen Street says, “Steve explained that he wanted to make this album with his band playing more ‘live’ than on some of his previous offerings and also to augment the songs with brass and female backing vocalists. I felt this approach of first stripping back the songs to a more ‘live’ feel to create more space for the more ‘soulful’ elements to breathe in was an interesting one and we got down to work!”

Recorded at studios in London and Brighton, About The Light, sees a subtle yet noticeable evolution in Steve’s sound.

“It’s a beautiful, confident, positive, angry, loving and gentle album which once again moves what I do forward,” he adds.  “David Bowie said that you should always be slightly out of your comfort zone if you want to achieve greatness, and for the first time perhaps ever, I deliberately pushed myself into that place. Who doesn’t want greatness?”

Art School Girlfriend releases her latest single 'Diving' via Wolftone Records and has also shared equally dreamy visuals to accompany the release. Watch above.

“Diving is about desire and anxiety in equal measure,” explains Art School Girlfriend (AKA Polly Mackey). Written during a shift in Mackey’s personal life, the lyrics muse on the anticipation of new possibilities in her relationship. Grounded in quintessential Art School Girlfriend production elements - cavernous space, swathes of reverb and great rushes of air - Mackey’s vocal is centered in the ebb and flow.

WATCHING (SANDY) ALEX G 'HOPE' (DOMINO ALL-IN)

(Sandy) Alex G 'House Of Sugar'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

(Sandy) Alex G has shared a new track and accompanying video, “Hope”, from his forthcoming album, House of Sugar.

(Sandy) Alex G, a.k.a. the singer, songwriter, and musician Alex Giannascoli, began writing the songs that would ultimately become House of Sugar in the fall of 2017. Whereas with earlier efforts, such as 2011’s self-released Winner or the landmark 2014 release DSU, music was written and recorded at a prolific clip, with these new songs Giannascoli approached the recording process with a newfound deliberateness, concentrating on a smaller collection of songs and laboring over each with more focus and acuity than ever before.

Giannascoli worked closely with Jacob Portrait, who mixed both Rocket and 2015’s Beach Music, and helped to balance each of House of Sugar’s dense, multi-faceted tracks. As the product of extended focus and planning, House of Sugar emerges as Giannascoli’s most meticulous, cohesive album yet: a statement of artistic purpose, showing off his ear for both persistent earworms and shifting textures, and the out-there sonic adventurism that’s made previous (Sandy) Alex G records so singular.

Four years since their critically acclaimed album, Escape From Evil, Lower Dens recently announced their newest creation - The Competition - which will be released on Ribbon Music on September 6th.  Today, Lower Dens are happy to share the video for the second single from the album, directed by Jason Nocito, featuring choreography by Veleda Roehl and dancers Stephannie Henriquez & Steven Jeltsch. “I Drive” follows on the heels - in both sequence and theme - of the album’s lead single Young Republicans, about a certain sect of society's elite. On “I Drive,” Jana Hunter sings inquisitively “We had streets. But now there’s just police.  I drive at night.

On “I Drive”, Hunter says, “Like a lot of queer and trans people, I've learned that real family is made, and it isn't necessarily blood. Even my blood relatives, we work for that familial connection and trust. This song is about leaving behind obligations to people who don't love or care about you, being with and about people who do. It's a feeling so strong it's driving me. That's the driving I'm doing."

VILLAGERS 'SUMMER'S SONG' OUT 9TH JULY 2019 (DOMINO ALL-IN)

Villagers 'Summer's Song'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Villagers are pleased to share a brand new single, “Summer’s Song”. Featuring a chorus of six flugelhorns, “Summer’s Song” was written and produced by Conor O’Brien and mixed by the legendary Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, Flaming Lips, MGMT). Watch the video above.

In Conor’s words: “Summer's Song is the closest I'll ever get to writing a pure pop song. I just had to roll with it and I'm glad I did; it was really just an excuse to make the horns sound like sunbeams. Boy it's fun to play live. I can't quite believe we managed to get the magical touch of Dave Fridmann in on the mix”. The video - animated by Joe May and illustrated by Patricio Bauzá - is equally drenched with memories of summers past and anticipation of those to come.

Fresh from supporting Mumford & Sons on their recent UK arena tour, Villagers will be playing shows throughout the summer including a sold-out gig at Dublin’s glorious Iveagh Gardens (his biggest ever headline - 4000 cap).  A European tour including Paradiso, Amsterdam and the Rolling Stone Weekenders in Germany have also been announced for November.

Villagers released their acclaimed fourth album The Art Of Pretending To Swim last year and O’Brien has a string of accolades under his belt including two Ivor Novello Awards, two Mercury Music Prize nominations and is a previous winner of Ireland’s Choice Music Prize.

Additionally, Villagers’ music has featured in both seasons of HBO drama ‘Big Little Lies’ – reaching the Top 60 Shazam charts in the UK and US last month - and their Spotify session of “Nothing Arrived” has hit over 130 million streams.
