Toronto-based Austra is set to release a brand new four-track Habitat EP on June 16th.

‘Habitat is an old song that we've waited almost three years to release’, says the band's Katie Stelmanis. ‘It didn't seem to fit with the sounds of "Feel it Break" or "Olympia", so we decided to finally put it out as a single along with 3 new instrumental tracks. There's a lot of live versions of the song online but people have always pressed us to make a proper recording, so we are especially excited to announce these limited-edition physical copies of the EP. It’s a euro-style computer music experiment produced with love from me, Maya, and Dorian."

The band recently completed US west coast dates with Chvrches after having performed at Coachella. In addition to a series of upcoming North American festivals the band have several UK and European shows over the summer.

BILL RYDER-JONES 'YAWNY YAWN' OUT 26TH JULY 2019 (DOMINO ALL-IN)

DOMINO ALL-IN
Bill Ryder-Jones 'Yawny Yawn'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

At the end of 2018, Bill Ryder-Jones released the critically acclaimed Yawn – his beautiful fourth album. He has now reimagined the songs from Yawn, this time with only vocals and piano, opening an even more intimate window onto his world. Taking inspiration from The Beach Boys, Bill has titled this alternative version of the record Yawny Yawn and it will be released on July 26th. The first track to recieve a reimagining is 'Don't Be Scared, I Love you' which can be watched above.

In his own inimitable style, Bill Ryder-Jones says: “I can't remember why I thought it was a good idea to make a piano version of Yawn, I presume at some point I felt that the original had too much pep. Was actually quite fun to make although I've since developed a dislike for the way my hands look”.

Similarly to Yawn, the album artwork for Yawny Yawn features a family photo. Bill adds: “Much like the artwork for Yawn, this photo just looked like it should be an album cover. Whereas Yawn featured my brother, our babysitter and myself in the background, the artwork for Yawny Yawn shows me at my aunt's house aged 3 and playing my keyboard.”

Multi-instrumentalist, producer, string-arranger and composer Bill Ryder-Jones has had a career spanning 15 years, a rarity in a world that so often looks to the new.  From his musical interpretation of Italo Calvino’s ‘If On A Winters Night A Traveller' (If… in 2011), 2013’s A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart, West Kirby County Primary (2015) and last year’s Yawn, Bill has constantly widened his scope, weaving in an overarching sense of authenticity, intimacy and wryness as he goes.

Black Midi announce their debut album 'Schlagenheim' out 21st June 2019 via Rough Trade Records. This release follows a string of single releases 'Talking Heads' and' Crows Perch', a sold out US tour and being named 'the “best band in London” nobody knows a thing about?' [NME]. Watch the video for Crow's Perch above.

The album is scratchy, intense and discordant with roaring riffs, locked in rhythm section and a truly unique vocal make black midi stand head and shoulders above all in 2019. black midi - Georgie Greep (vocals / guitar), Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin (vocals / guitar), Cameron Picton (vocals / bass), and Morgan Simpson (drums) - have a dynamic energy, playing as a musical unit that’s constantly in a state of flux and development. They bonded over shared musical enthusiasms, or "liking messed up things" as Kwasniewski-Kelvin puts it, including an appreciation for rapper Danny Brown, Death Grips, Deerhoof, Miles Davis and Talking Heads.

Schlagenheim was recorded with Speedy Wunderground producer Dan Carey, who the band praises for his quick, unfussy approach. black midi laid down eight of the record’s nine tracks in just five days. The process was one of refining and rebuilding tracks around the initial structures. Five hour jams would sometimes yield a riff that then became a few bars of a song.

NERIJA 'BLUME' OUT 2ND AUGUST 2019 (DOMINO ALL-IN)

DOMINO ALL-IN
Nerija 'Riverfest'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Nérija announce their debut album, Blume, due for release on 2nd August 2019 on Domino. With the announcement of Blume comes the first track from the record, “Riverfest” - written by the whole band, could perhaps be the entry point for anyone new to Nérija. With blistering playing from the band, it’s a track that exudes feeling, capturing the best aspects of their live sets while adding some indefinable studio magic. Listen to the track above.

Nérija are the septet of contemporary jazz luminaries, Nubya Garcia (tenor saxophone), Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet), Cassie Kinoshi (alto saxophone), Rosie Turton (trombone), Shirley Tetteh (guitar), Lizy Exell (drums) and Rio Kai (bass). Rooted in friendship, Nérija is a collective whose breakneck shifts in tempo and style rely on a deep understanding of mood, temperament and expression, a solid show of trust that extends beyond the usual bonds between musicians.

Recorded in the boat-shaped confines of London’s legendary Soup Studios and produced by Kwes, the overarching goal with Blume was to simply capture the rawness, warmth, joy and the spirit of their relationship and performance. One of the recording aims was to channel the feel of Teo Macero and Stanley Tonkel’s records with Miles Davis during his Columbia years, thinking “forward” as they did but for this band, capturing the controlled chaos and frame it with a timeless elegance.

Blume is a truly breath-taking collection of compositions that perfectly encapsulates everything Nérija; vibrant, engaging, infectious and truly current. For just over an hour, they take us on a sprawling wonderful journey, arriving at what is a majestic body of work; their personal and collective experiences and inspirations over the last half decade or so.

Inspired by teaching songwriting in two southern California area women’s prisons, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Eleni Mandell will release Wake Up Again June 7, on Yep Roc Records. Watch the Inara George directed video for 'Circumstance' above.

“Circumstance was inspired by two different women. Neither accepted responsibility for what lead to their incarceration. One said, “it just happened.” The other woman claimed that it was all her boyfriend’s fault. The word ‘circumstance’ comes from ‘around’ and ‘stand’, which I thought applied so well to life in prison, which requires a lot of standing around.”

For nearly two years, through Jail Guitar Doors, the organization founded by MC5’s Wayne Kramer and Billy Bragg, and the William James AssociationMandell “loved working with the inmates, hearing their stories and seeing them light up when they heard their words come to life in a song.”

Produced by Sheldon Gomberg at his Silver Lake studio, the album features 11 original compositions with Mandell on vocals and acoustic guitar, Milo Jones (guitar), Ryan Feves (bass), and Kevin Fitzgerald (drums).

WATCHING CATE LE BON 'HOME TO YOU' (DOMINO PUBLISHING)

Cate Le Bon 'Reward'

Cate Le Bon has shared the latest video from her album 'Reward' released on 24th May via Mexican Summer. Watch above.

The video for “Home To You” was made in Košice, Slovakia in collaboration with residents of Lunik IX neighbourhood. It was directed by visual artist and filmmaker Phil Collins, who had previously worked in the city in 2013, and is co-produced with Kino Úsmev. Kino Úsmev's new educational initiative is aimed at establishing connections between young people from Lunik IX and other parts of the city through filmmaking workshops, practical production and public presentation of resulting works.

Reward (2019): 'It was on a mountainside in Cumbria that the first whispers of Cate Le Bon’s fifth studio album poked their buds above the earth. “There’s a strange romanticism to going a little bit crazy and playing the piano to yourself and singing into the night,” she says, recounting the year living solitarily in the Lake District which gave way to Reward. By day, ever the polymath, Le Bon painstakingly learnt to make solid wood tables, stools and chairs from scratch; by night she looked to a second-hand Meers — the first piano she had ever owned —for company, “windows closed to absolutely everyone”, and accidentally poured her heart out. The result is an album every bit as stylistically varied, surrealistically-inclined and tactile as those in the enduring outsider’s back catalogue, but one that is also intensely introspective and profound; her most personal to date.'
