Teenage Toy is the latest track from Insecure Men (via Fat Possum Records), the band led by the fiercely talented songwriter and musician Saul Adamczewski and his schoolmate and stabilising influence, Ben Romans-Hopcraft. Listen below.

Outwardly a charming exercise in timeless pop, exotica and easy listening and ostensibly a near flawless execution of the ‘perfect pop song’, there however lurks a darker heart beneath the surface of Teenage Toy. As Saul says it’s “pretty music with a dark underbelly to it”. “Teenage Toy is about adolescent sexuality and how frustrating that can be for most of us, especially people growing up in the suburbs or suburbs of the suburbs,” he adds. “Like those towns that only have one garage. We wanted it to sound like a demented cartoon world. I think we achieved that. Well done us.”

The track was written by Saul at The Queens Head pub, Stockwell, the Fat White Family’s notorious South London ‘practice space’, subsequently recorded onto an ancient Tascam at Sean Lennon’s studio in upstate New York and produced by Sean Lennon and mixed by Marta Salogni

Xenoula 'Xenoula'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Ahead of the release of Xenoula’s debut album later this month on the 24th November via Weird World, Xenoula shares the video for ‘Luna Man’. Watch above.

Teaming up with producer Sam Dust aka LA Priest (whose recent work includes his own debut solo album as well as Connan Mockasin collaboration Soft Hair), Xenoula’s songs are adorned in a chameleon-like coat of shape-shifting sonic textures, from the brooding, electric clouds and pulsing synths of ‘Chief of Tin’ to the sun-warped bassline pop of ‘Caramello’.

Xenoula is Romy Xeno. Romy spent her early years in South Africa where she was influenced by the elemental songs of nearby villagers and the (tranquil) rhythms of nature. Here she developed an introspective affinity with flora and fauna rather than with man and machines. When Romy moved back to the UK at the age of 16, the culture shock and collision of two contrasting worlds inspired her to make music as a way of communicating her feelings about her new surroundings to the crowds of people she instinctively shied away from.

Microshift is the third album from Hookworms, due for release on February 2nd 2018 via Domino. With the announcement of Microshift, the band share new track, ‘Negative Space’ along with new music, Hookworms will return to the live circuit with dates in both 2017 and in 2018. Watch above.

Microshift is the Leeds band's first new work in over 3 years and marks a seismic shift in their sound, dynamic, songwriting and production, whilst still bearing all the ferocious energy, intricate musicianship and bruised but beautiful song-craft of the previous releases which have quietly made them one of the UK's most revered young bands.

The album is formed out of loops, modular synthesizer sequences, drum machines, homemade samples etc. which were jammed around and layered until the songs began to emerge. The band have also opened their writing to include collaborations with artists such as Richard Formby (on Opener), Christopher Duffin (on Boxing Day) and Alice Merida Richards (on Each Time We Pass).

L.A.Salami marks his return today with a brand new track, titled Terrorism (The Isis Crisis) with accompanying animated video aligned to the lyrical content of the song. Watch above.

L.A. Salami comments on the release with “I think the video and song are pretty self explanatory. If it’s not, well, key words to consider would be ‘irony’ , ‘hysteria’ and ‘consequence’.”

Last heard earlier this year with the release of his Lookman And The Bookmakers EP, he has been working on the follow-up to his well-received debut album, 2016’s Dancing With Bad Grammar. A somewhat prolific songwriter, he has also spent much of the past year touring with extensive live schedules both sides of the Atlantic attracting  plaudits from the likes of NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, Sunday Times & GQ along the way.

WATCHING PROTOMARTYR 'DON'T GO TO ANACITA' (DOMINO ALL-IN)

Protomartyr 'Don't Go To Anacita'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Protomartyr premiere a new video for their single ‘Don't Go To Anacita’ via The New Yorker. Watch the video directed by Yoonha Park above.

The song is one of the most anthemic the band have written, and is one of the highlights off their critically acclaimed new album, Relatives In Descent. Singer Joe Casey described the fictional town of Anacita in a recent interview with NPR Music. "From touring around America you get to see all sorts of municipalities," says Casey, "and I picture Anacita as an affluent suburb that looks quaint and respectable but maybe has too many cops for the population size. Like, maybe the next town over is a little more down-on-its-heel and the border between the two is stark in its sharpness."

The surreal video, inspired equally by obvious touchstone Stairway to Lenin’ by Zbigniew Rybzynski and R.E.M.'s ‘Imitation of Life,’ director, Yoonha Park, said "I wanted to make a visual that recreated the feeling of scanning over a large, densely populated image, like a Breughel painting or Where’s Waldo?. I wanted to convey a feeling of false progress and the idea that every new horror that meets us is part of a never-ending continuum. Joe Casey’s lyrics are chock full of references both contemporary and classical, often in the same song. It creates a really unique visual field that conveys the exact flavor of dread I find myself feeling a lot lately.”

Bons ‘Gras H'utsi’
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Bons (Kevin Cormack, Matthew Hunt and Mathew Fowler) announce their album ‘Gras H'utsi’ released by Spillage Fete Records on the 30th October 2017. Listen above.

Electro-acoustic hocus pocus and melancholic, digitally disrupted chamber-folk miniatures. Fowler and Cormack are behind some of our favourite underground sides of recent times, all released, like Gras H'utsi, through their own Spillage Fete private press. As with their duo project Jam Money, and Cormack's solo work as Harry Deerness, Bons is driven by a collagistic, ambient pop impulse which can be traced back through early 2000s British post-rock (Disco Inferno, Pram) to the 80s DIY pastoralia of Flaming Tunes, Leven Signs et al.

Fragments of rootsy, arcadian instrumentation - acoustic guitar, woodwind, violin, muted horn - sutured together with eerie synth sustains, hypnotic hand-drums, and a panoply of richly evocative, often disquieting samples (from the sound of jammed computer keys to lovelorn, Kevin Ayers-ish vocal refrains).

Franz Ferdinand 'Always Ascending'
GET: MP3 | WAV | LICENSE

Always Ascending’ is the new album from Franz Ferdinand, released by Domino Records on the 9th February 2018.  Nothing short of a rebirth, the album’s 10 songs are a triumphant recasting of the group, bursting with fresh ideas and vigorous sonic experimentation. Listen above.

Recorded at RAK Studios, London and Motorbass in Paris, with the help of French producer extraordinaire Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Phoenix, The Beastie Boys), the mutual affection between band and producer seeping into every dazzling groove. ‘Always Ascending’ shows Franz Ferdinand broadening their palate, as exuberant as it is euphoric, creating a sound that singer, Alex Kapranos, refers to as “simultaneously futuristic and naturalistic.”

From the city which jointly played host to the album’s conception, the band will mark the announcement of ‘Always Ascending’ with a live streamed launch event at Paris’s Point Ephémère, to be broadcast from the Franz Ferdinand Facebook page from 8.30pm BST tonight, Wednesday October 25, during which the band will preview a selection of their new recordings.
